DEAN'S GIRL HAS LEFT THE BUILDING

Hey there Phantom
You know where Kate is?

Kate's absolutely not here
AT THE BIJOU today Mr Martin. I've looked around.
There's a cake somewhere with her name on it in aqua icing and a sailboat ready to take on all the winds a compass rose by any other name comes to know.

She asked me to tell you music and minds such as yours has made her life all the more enriched. And that she really digs all the fine folks who come 'round for a great time AT THE BIJOU.

Well ain't that a kick in the head. Tell her you're nobody til somebody loves you and everybody loves somebody sometime and well, most times, I sure am sweet on her. That kid's got moxie and jive and loyalty to what matters. World needs more jive. World needs plenty more of what matters.

When you're in a dream and you know you're not dreaming . . . when you dance down the street and the clouds are at your feet . . .  Well, in the cool cool cool of that evening, tell her I'll be there.

Absolutely
Happy*Birthday

"Carrie you realize just whose papers we have here? You'd better be reeeally tricky when you sneak them back to the guy."

What? Me run the return gig? Why not You, Big Guy? Why do I get stuck with the tricky jobs? Oh - and WHO, just who is it that has you, oh great Phantom AT THE BIJOU in such a tizzy?"

"Who you callin' a tizzy Lizzie? Why you - you - "

"Hang on to your facade there Phantom. The guy back at the Lucky Shot evidently rattled your chains. Admit it."

"Damn it Carrie. Ghosts shake chains. Snow tires clunk around with chains. Chain gangs get notorious with chains. I'm of the sophisticated apparitional variety. I'm a classy dude, I am. I'm an illustrious aspect of imaginary fancy.  I'm -- "

"Can the pomposity Phantom boy. Who's the mark that yanked your spark?"

"Why Carrie - you wound my pride. And as an astute aside, you metaphor practically as prolifically as he."

"He? He WHO?"

"Why Paul. The notorious Paul Caracas. InterNoir. Writer. Plot-deplotter. More a specialized savant as solvent than a generic go-by-the-book solver. Can discern where a crime scene is going before the brushstrokes on the canvas are even dry. Why -- "

"Now who's living the high life in Metaphor City? Geeez Phant, you're tellin' me someone called in a ringer this quick at what's goin' on AT THE BIJOU? You heard what we heard while we hid from Lieutenant Phillips' lowdown layed down to the BIJOU femmes. The mystery of the prone projectionist, bloody bathroom, Cheezum chase and balcony bash doesn't even have history yet! All these crazy calamities occured TODAY!   You're either way off track at what train of thought you're puffing at, or that's pretty far advanced high falutin' thinkin' on someone's part . . . I think."
"I think I can. I think I can. Whoops. I mean - I think so too Carrie. Now, how do you think you're going to smoothly get this dossier folio back to the Euro-feller before it's missed?"

Clevenger's exasperated sigh passed right through the Phantom's transparent left eye.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

What traversed though through her transparent friend was apparently apparent to Kate, on the other side of the BIJOU's pass-through secret wallway. Despite Lieutenant Phillips' charming accented assurances of "All will be well ladies, all will be well", this was turning into much more than an open and shut case around her spirited theatre place, AT THE BIJOU.

What could possibly happen next and how were they going to get to the bottom of all these dangling dangers? It was half past time to make the call she thought she'd never have to make . . .

Cliff*Hanger? Why that's no cliff'hanger (yet). (But there were some clues.) The whole BIJOU crew is taking time off to celebrate Mother's Day, (so we don't get yelled at). We'll be racing back next weekend with ~ The Prints, The Popper and the Preakness!

"The Clot Thickens"

~ By Absolutely*Kate
and
Harry B. Sanderford

"Ah saay, ah saay . . . who the heck parked that fire-enginey red shiny flashy lights vehicle in my reserved T-Bird spot? Doggone it! Is nothin' sacred here AT THE BIJOU? I've been havin' nothin' but fun, fun, fun in that joy jalopy so that Dad never takes it away - - SAAAAAAY Eddie, Shoogs -- what's up with all the down looks perplexin' around here? Where's everybody's customary cheer? -- "

AT THE BIJOU's hometown hero Harry was cut off mid-exclaimin' by the zoooom of Zelda through the double hung virile mahogany doors. "There's a bloody mess in the Ladies' Room I fear!!!"

Sugar, though an indomitable damsel of distinction not ever frettin' distress, still reached for the solid comfort feel of Harry's black leather jacket's appeal, smilin' through her shivers at his constant attempts to be THE BIJOU's Author Fonzarelli. Zelda let loose with a zither of a 'splainin' as to why her hands were a tell'tale crimson and her face bright fright white. And was that Leon lingering under a pulled down fedora near a pile up of tumbled lime jello shots near Zelda's normal lucky row, row number 13?

I saw all this and I saw that well-loved Popper fella Eddie take advantage of the dames on the explain to whip his magnifying glass into range, down a little closer to the side'arm where Jeanette last was seen on the scene. That little bugger bent even further in his furtive investigation and whipped some scrap from the floor to his pocket. Hmm, wonder what that is. I'll have to get closer to see.

Me?

I'm the Phantom AT THE BIJOU. Naturally. I know all but don't necessarily tell all. The only two that really can perceive me, so far . . . is of course that communing Kate and somehow, vibrationally I think, the clever Clevenger, scary that Carrie. Leon might be on to me, but I'm not quite sure ~ a lot goes on under an astute detective-writer's pulled down dapper fedora. Not sure yet if anyone other than Zelda knows he's shadowing this BIJOU scene. I'm sensing Leon feels that too ~ he's moving rather stealthily.

Well let's watch the history of this mystery unfold, shall we? And where's Carrie? You see her?

"Look you guys! LOOK!
I saw a flicker in the balcony! Just now!!", Sugar's dolce vita sweet tones switched to shreik-frequency, bypassing several octaves.

Attuned, a low'range mutter of a man's deep rumble jostled the assembled theatre group, "Here's a clue, crew. That's the Professor, Katie's plum. In the balcony. With a candlestick. He says it helps him be authentic when reading ancient history.”

Leon Jackson Davenport stepped out of the shadows of the seat rows below the balcony startling a starting to be nervous Sugar and the already jumpy Zelda. Funny how he had a knack for appearing out of nowhere. He pushed his fedora back on his head and put a hand on Sugar’s elbow in a calming gesture, “Everything OK up top Professor?”

“I might be able to shed some light . . .” The Prof began.

“You’re going to want to be careful with the crime scene there Junior.” Leon interrupted, turning his attention to Eddie who was now on his belly between the seats wriggling his reach up to the shoulder for something under the chair.

Eddie left whatever he was after where it was and sprang to his feet. “I haven’t disturbed anything Mr. Leon. Honest, just nosin’ around.” Mr. Leon might be the  licensed P.I. around here but as far as Eddie was concerned this was his investigation. “When did you get here anyway?”

“Don’t look now but here come the fuzz.”, Harry said nodding in the direction of the double doors that had not seen as much swinging since proprietor Kate’s Three Drink Minimum, 3-D Triple-Feature Thirst-days had been canceled. The promotion had been well received but male patrons routinely forgot to take off their cardboard glasses on their frequent and increasingly less accurate visits to the men’s room.

Lieutenant Phillips was first through the doors followed closely by Sergeant Stine and they by three more uniforms. “OK folks, I’m not sure just what’s been on around here but I have a dead man in the projection booth, a ladies' restroom that looks a bit like the Tate’s place after a weekend with Charlie and one missing movie reviewer. We’ll be needing statements from the lot of you, so please get comfortable.” Paul Phillips, known as The Constable even though his accent was Australian rather than British was a no-nonsense and for the most part a fair and effective policeman.  “OK people, you heard the Captain,” Sergeant Daniel Stine barked. He had been passed over for Lieutenant in favor of his new boss and referred to him as Captain sarcastically. “Have a seat and one of the officers will be with you for any information you can lend.”

Zelda was first to speak up offering, “Lieutenant, the professor was just about to shed some light, I think is how he put it, Prof?” All eyes turned to the balcony  in time to see The Prof’s candle flicker out cloaking the balcony in utter darkness. “Prof . . . Professor?”

THE PHANTOM OF THE BIJOU?

THE PHANTOM OF THE BIJOU . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ((( ponders Absolutely*Kate? )))

THE PHANTOM OF THE BIJOU

...is believed to be lurking between rows 28 and 33 in our spirited theatre. He or she (tis a morphing entity), once sat next to Carrie Clevenger, near front and center's popcorn gallery, and was scared sigh-high to a new lair.

The better there from said lair, to conjure/channel vibes of show*biz luminaries sensed in the ethers while shadowing edginess stage left,(heavens to ghost of Murgatroyd), from klieg's lambent light. Oh say can you see, by that klieg's lambent light a palpable *sensation*, a stance of sensuality, in a peel-me-a-glove kind of delight?

Could it be? MS GYPSY ROSE LEE? The one in the hat, prior to dear Nat? The one, the only ... Shhh, listen ~ here comes a hush, "Everything worth doing, is worth doing slowly ... very ... slowly ..." Oh my, I do believe in ghosts. I do sense it's her. Phantom's on the prowl. So plush, so lush. If she sits in your lap, surely you'll know. Rise to the occasion gents and please pretend you're at Minsky's. Burlesque boasts best, shimmied with intellectual wit ~ that's Gypsy's climb to fame. Our Madame Z, you should know, is a third-cousin-not-removed, inheriting most of the family's disarming charm. And yes, it's true, she did have Otto Preminger's love'child - Gypsy, not Zelda, geeeez.

Legendary status is what legendary status shall e'er be ~ a sharp sense of stylish humour vs any herky-jerky run-o-the-mill thrill. Gypsy brung the *tease* to striptease, and there, naturally, fluently, flaunted thanks for how she pleased.

But did you know Gypsy was also a writer of her own merit? Jeanette still has the copy she purloined from the Ladies Lounge off the balcony ~ The G-String Murders. We heard Sal is quenching at the bit to turn it into a haiku hit in his jaunty scrawls on stall walls in the mezzanine Men's Room. Read fast, Jeanette, read fast!

Tis true too ~ the meddling mother of Louise Hovic, (more a sinuous shimmy after stage-dubbing herself Gypsy Rose, eh?), did shoot and kill one of the tenants during a ruckus in her boarding house. Indeed ~ Rumours were flying. That very small snub-nosed pistol has appeared in not only Gypsy's shimmer beaded bag, but figured provocatively in numerous pocket-flashes of Paul Brazill's, Eric Beetner's, Kevin Michaels' and the new kid on Noir's block, Anthony Venutolo's shadowy tale spins.

Should you intuit a blurred vaporizing of sweet Natalie Wood AT THE BIJOU's candy counter, breathe easy ~ It's only Robert Crisman's burst of hot flash on his first crush. How do you think a writer like that upped his ante in starlust memories?
