"When you wish upon a star makes no difference where you are -- Hey, you remember that tune?"
"Sure, sure. That's Jiminy Cricket at the beginning of the old Disney show. Wasn't it on Sunday nights?"
"Yep, a little while after Timmy and Lassie got some neighbor out of the well in time for Mrs Martin to put meat and potatoes on the checkered table cloth, early enough that we could still watch the show before bedtime on a school night. Nothing like magic huh?"
"What? You gettin' all wistful on me again? Here, bring your breathless charm and the wistful that rode in with it over here on the couch, Kid. Sink your slinky side into what side of me is your very best favourite. That's OK, leave the drapes open, shut the lamp and the TV too. Why, if you're feelin' lucky - - I may even croon to you - -
Some day, when I'm awfully low,
When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you...
And the way you look tonight.
Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight.
With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart...
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
It touches my foolish heart.
Lovely ... Never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it ?
'Cause I love you ... Just the way you look tonight.
Mm, Mm, Mm, Mm,
Just the way you look to-night."
Annette's fingers reached up to play among the stars she saw doing the loop-da-loop far, far back in his eyes. He flew her to the moon every time he gave her croon. She was a sucker for good croon. She let all the body parts that mattered go liquid, languishing both mood and moment. He was her lucky star past where folks muttered mundane into their Mondays, talked tedious to their Tuesdays and simpered same-old, same-old in the pile-up of the rest of their life weeks. No norm for how good lovin' embraces a vivid and vital life. "Ah geeeez, you gave me Frankie. You know I love it when you croon me Blue Eyes, brown eyes."
Rustlin' up his best Rhett, "Frankly my dear, I gave you that song and I give ya my all. Now, whatcha gonna give to me?"
Annette giggled. She was so glad she still knew how to giggle. She just opened her mouth and knew. Embracing life with gusto tends to prime that in a gal. So she gave him the best she could give. She gave him her all. She opened and reached and tendered and touselled and damn near tuckered her man all out, right there on a Sunday couch with the drapes wide open, the moonglow spillin' into their scene. He groaned, he moaned, he grabbed with gusto for more . . . and then some.
In the afterglow, with the moon glow, he whispered softly, exhaustedly, "Whoa", as his throat and fingers caught tender in the tendrils of the greying edges of her loose and tangled curls, "What did you do to my heart . . . and DID you wish upon that star?"
"Of course I did. You know I did. I believe in magic and fairytales coming true happening to you when you're young at heart. And -- well, that's what I did and shall always do to your big heart."
He pulled and plied her in close, closer, all the way a heart twirls when you don't know where your part starts and hers swirls through with sensation's momentum. He thought of wild, he thought of free, of elusive no longer on a spree. He found it remarkable that the first star he ever wished on . . . he got. He cleared his throat but his emotion still thickened through, "Whatchoo wish for then?"
Annette snuggled into his bare shoulder, tantalized her tongue along that place on his neck she fondly called home. "I wished for my friend past all ends, for magic always a conjure away and for the vibrance of an ever playful hubby, Cubby."

where the cool kids come to play
Amazing photo from the Moodflow collection of screensavers.
Do make a wish upon them at the talented designer Dustin Luck's site.
The Sinatra hit "The Way You Look Tonight", that always wows Kate,
was written by lyricist Dorothy Fields to the tantalizing tune of Jerome Kern, sung for the first time to Ginger Rogers (by Fred of course), winning the Academy Award for best song in 1936.
But Ladies and Gents, when the right song is sung,
doesn't it always seem like yesterday is now?

The word verification for this comment could not be more appropriate: miciesti. For us baby boomers the Mouseketeers are a fond heart's memory of innocence and enchantment, for we all longed to be a Mouseketeer. It is nice, as nice could be to know, that Annette and Cubby, found in later years what we all hoped our lives to be and as Frank so aptly sang with unmatched perfection.
This is a fulfillment of all that the Mouseketeers wanted to be. This a that moondream that glowed in all our hearts and still does.
Thanks Kate for this precious joining of past and present amid the ambiance of loving music. It was truly miciesti!
Well done.....for the briefest of moments I was transported back to my spot on the living room floor in front of the old black and white TV, and a time from the past that gives my heart a twinge.
Thanks Kate
What lovely language. And what a wonderful relationship these two have. May everyone be that lucky.
Just a delightful tale, and Sinatra is the icing on the cake.
Love it.
I bet Cubby wishes upon a star that you had been writing the scripts!
The language in this just flows...and pools...and washes over the reader leaving him, this one certainly, tingling all over.
Wonderful, wonderful stuff. And magical with it.
Really well done.
Very cute story!
How very warm, as warm as moonglow splashing, to feel the stir and eloquence of gentle-men recalling Mousketeer moments ... (and the first awakening of just how special femmes were in an Annette Funicello kind of world going forward?)
Yes, as intuitive GRACIE got it, how lovely to 'relax' into that kind of passion, at all ages.
Special thanks, special menfolk MATT, KEVIN and KjM for your classy comments. You thrilled me to stir you. You did.
HARRY ~ How I smiled at scripting for Cubbie, Annette and Uncle Walt - Wowzers - how cool would that be?
